Pelvic floor anatomy + awareness

Before we start our Kegels and pelvic floor muscles exercises, we need to become aware of our pelvic floor anatomy and it’s different areas. Don’t worry you, you don’t need to have tons of anatomy lessons. This is about experiential and practical anatomy.

Right now all you need to do is bring the awareness to the pelvic floor and feel it, experience it and notice. No judgement. If you can’t feel anything right now that’s ok. But don’t give up! Eventually, it will come. I am happy to guide you through several practices through my Sacred Pelvis online course. Here you get audio recordings, meditations as well as yoga videos ~ to help you get a stronger, more flexible and balanced pelvic floor and pelvis. And you learn more anatomy too.

Are we tightening them when we are stressed or angry? Are they in a constant “stress mode”? Are we able to relax them and then engage them? Having a “tight” pelvic floor does not mean it is strong. Just like many of us have tensions and tightness in our neck and shoulders – well, the same goes for the pelvic floor too.

Finding the pelvic floor

Once we start to understand the basic pelvic floor anatomy then we can become more intimate with our roots.

Think of a diamond shape between your pubic bone and tailbone. And between the two sitting bones. Here we have layers of muscles – all part of the pelvic floor.

Can you locate the back of the pelvic floor around the anal sphincter muscle? Imagine having to pass wind but you try to hold it. And then relax.

Now imagine having to pee but trying to hold and then let go.

Notice if you can feel a difference between the front and back of the pelvic floor engagements.

Now feel the vaginal muscles. Can you locate them and then lift them in towards each other and upwards?

I delve deep into various practises to connect, release and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles in the Sacred Pelvis course which is an online course. Here you learn both practical anatomy as well as yoga video instructions, audio practices and meditations. To learn more click here.

Some women are bearing down rather than lifting up simply because we haven’t been taught or checked if we do it correctly. Testing the muscle strength of the vaginal muscles can be done intimately if you have a male partner (something he will enjoy too!), your finger, using vaginal eggs or the Elvie Pelvic Floor trainer. And, remember the pelvic floor is part of our orgasmic muscles so nice for us as well.
