Teaching yoga for the menstrual cycle

an ayurvedic approach

Most of us are aware of when to except our period. We get a notification from our app or there’s a note in the diary. Perhaps we realise that our irritation or tearfulness is because we are just about to bleed.

But for most of us, that’s it.

Our period is simply a sign that we aren’t pregnant and we don’t really know much more or engage with it any further. Except perhaps if you have tried to conceive and started tracking your ovulation. Completely forgetting about our follicular and luteal phases.

But our menstrual cycle is so much more than that.

It affects us in all parts of our life. Our hormones change through the cycle. And from an āyurvedic perspective so does our dosas. We have seasons and phases. Yet, we try to pretend we don’t.

This is such a shame because each phase has immense benefits - if only we know how to listen to our body, our energy and our womb wisdom.

I am so passionate about this topic that I wrote a book: Teaching yoga for the menstrual cycle - an āyurvedic approach is out on the 21st of December and you can pre-order NOW to save 20% (LANGEA20PRE) over on my publisher’s (Singing Dragon) sites in the UK and US.

It’s an education and a resource where you’ll understand the Western view on our cycles as well as the āyurvedic understanding.

  • We’ll even dive into some of the cultural and historical perspectives as it applies to our yoga practice and yoga teaching.

  • You’ll learn about each phase of the cycle so you can teach/practise to work with your body rather than ignoring the natural strengths and powers of the changing inner seasons.

  • From the menstrual phase, through the follicular, ovulation and luteal phases.

  • We’ll discuss the Western and ayurvedic perspectives on common complaints and how to approach them with our yoga - and we look at the research behind it.

  • There is a section on the importance of ojas or rejuvenation.

  • We’ll acknowledge both fertility and perimenopause too through the book.

  • And for those without a cycle we connect with the actual moon

My teacher Shiva Rea says:

You are holding a treasure for women everywhere who are seeking help, balance, and attunement to the power of their moon cycle from the wisdom of Ayurveda and yoga as a way of life, rhythm and harmony with nature.”

Menstrual cycle awareness is crucially important when trying to understand the needs of your yoga students and this guide will give you the knowledge you need to confidently address the menstrual cycle when teaching students in group and one-on-one settings via the principles of both western and Ayurvedic approaches.

This book addresses the importance of the menstrual cycle and how Ayurvedic principles can best be applied to understand the anatomical, physiological and hormonal changes that take place during different stages and weeks throughout the menstrual cycle.

Although Anja has indicated that the level of information in this book is mainly for yoga teachers and practitioners, every woman in my view should be equipped with this knowledge to guide her choices and help deliver the optimum possibility of living life to the fullest

— Dr. Shijoe Mathew Anchery BAMS PG Dip.

I hope you will enjoy learning and exploring the incredible science of āyurveda and menstrual cycle awareness for your yoga and your life. And that of your students.
